Salaborsa Bologna library: the fulcrum of cultures and civilizations

Inaugurated in 2001 inside Palazzo d'Accursio, the seat of the Municipality, the Salaborsa Bologna library overlooks Piazza Nettuno and is the cultural center of the city.
The latest restoration works of the Salaborsa Library have made it possible to bring back to life a rich heritage of archaeological finds that can be seen by all tourists and visitors thanks to the free pavement of the current Piazza Covered.
From the Villanoviani, to the Atrusca Felzna , up to Roman Bononia , a visit to the Salaborsa Library will allow you to see the results of the stratification of the various civilizations that have occupied the Bolognese territory over the centuries.
Stories of distant eras
Some traces of public and religious buildings testify how the space where the Salaborsa Library is located today was once the beating heart of the Bolognese city life.
From the Roman age until the thirteenth century
Destined for public functions in the Roman age, the Salaborsa Bologna library is located in an area that has undergone multiple transformations over time. During the Middle Ages , a general impoverishment of the territory led to a considerable reduction in civil buildings, until the recovery of the thirteenth century, a period in which the area underwent a new phase of renewal .
In particular, this last historical period is characterized by the presence of civil buildings made with quality materials and high architectural level , belonging mainly to Ghibelline families. Among these, we remember, the family of the jurist and expert in law Francesco Accursio, who gave its name to the historic municipal building.
From the Middle Ages to the modern age
In the mid-thirteenth century , the area of the Salaborsa Library underwent another transformation which consisted in the total demolition of the previous remains and in the erection of a late Romanic style building, of which we today remember the suggestive portico overlooking the square.
Subsequently, in the last decades of the twentieth century, the building became the seat of municipal administrative offices . The restoration works of the area began only in 1999, in view of the redevelopment project of the Urban Park in Piazza Maggiore which finally marks the new intended use of the Salaborsa Bologna library as a place of culture and knowledge.
The Salaborsa Bologna library today
The latest renovation works of the Salaborsa Library have respected the pre -existing structure that has developed in over seven centuries of history: today visitors can admire the various stages along the suspended catwalk that is placed as a historic itinerary for the vision of the archaeological excavations below the crystal floor.
Starting from the wall perimeter of the Renaissance tank made by TerrIn, nickname a group of architects belonging to the same family, active mainly in the 16th century and, in addition to the foundations of the Roman basilica, it is possible to see the star -shaped tank, once located in the center of the garden and symbol of the cultural meaning of the new Salaborsa Library.
